United Empire Loyalists in Adolphustown

On June 16th 1784, a small band of loyalists led by Captain Peter Van Alstine landed on a wild stretch of Lake Ontario coast that was to become the township of Adolphustown. Little remains from those first few years when the settlers cleared the land and erected rough hewn houses to shelter their families and livestock. While pieces remain in museums and some private collections the story remains largely untold to the public.

On June 12th-14th 2009, a large group of dedicated men and women will make sure that the past is not forgotten. The public is invited to watch as 300 soldiers recreate the spectacle of 18th-century battle; canons fire from the bateaux just off shore and an entire tent city of settlers will be on hand to show what life was like for the newcomers. Take in a few of the many public lectures on history or maybe a screening of two documentary films to be released. Stick around in the evening for a play and stay for the fireworks then come back to browse the archives to discover your heritage. See you in June!
